The History
The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specially cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would usually take weeks to months to completely craft by hand.
Sweetheart jewelry was an intensely romantic and patriotic fashion that began with World War I and remained through the end of World War II. Soldiers would gift these pieces of jewelry to their wives and sweethearts who remained at home while they were fighting overseas. Many materials and metals were rationed during the great wars, so these pieces were made of alternative materials, such as wood or plastic. Silver was not a rationed material, and was used to create higher quality pieces. This type of jewelry was a reminder and a promise to fighting soldiers all over the world.
Baltic amber is found only in northern Europe and accounts for much of the known amber in the world. Amber is an organic fossilized resin that is formed when sap exudes from pine trees and hardens over many years. It typically contains an internal matrix of materials, including water or gas bubbles, organic plant matter, or even insects. Baltic amber specifically comes from sap that is 35 to 50 million years old and came from trees that are now covered by the Baltic Sea. It has been used since ancient times to create jewelry and decorative ornaments, and has long been used in folk medicine for its healing properties.
