Notable Features:
This necklace was handmade during the Mid Century era. Composed of 14k white gold, the necklace features a stunning green paste stone and white quartz pendant with a geometric design.
The inclusion of such colorful and sparkling stones in this necklace is an excellent example of the bold and creative styles of the Mid Century era, which saw jewelers create jewelry using uncommon and colorful stones, as well as incorporating new designs and re-purposing those from the past to craft entirely new pieces of jewelry
.
The pendant features a single large paste stone which displays a vivid green hue, meant to resemble that of an emerald. The paste stone is also semi-translucent, allowing light to filter through its body and illuminate its stunning color while reflecting off its round cut facets with eye-catching sparkle. This large paste stone rests securely in a white gold prong basket setting, the cool tone of the white gold a striking contrast to the brighter pink hue of the sapphires. The setting also suspends the stone, making it more prominent and adding to the elegance of the piece. Bordering the green paste are a halo of white quartz stone, which are, in turn, surrounded by a teardrop-shaped motif also adorned with white quartz. Each quartz contains an eye-clear, colorless hue that is perfectly complemented by their white gold prong settings. With round faceted cuts, the quartz sparkles beautifully when they catch the light.
This pendant was strung on a 14k white gold cable link chain. When worn, the pendant rests just at the collarbone against the décolletage on most people. A classic example of Mid Century jewelry, this necklace would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.
Damage:
Age appropriate wear.

The History
The Mid-Century era, 1935 to 1965, encompassed many new styles of art and architecture and this carried over to jewelry making. This exciting time for jewelry saw movements such as Hollywood Regency, Modernism, Brutalism, and the Atomic Age. Native American artisans were also making their mark in the jewelry industry. Artisans used many kinds of metals, gemstones, glass, and experimented with ceramic and wood as well. This era was filled with new and innovative designs, while also rejuvenating and reinventing older styles. The unique jewelry which emerged from this era is still very popular today.
French jeweler Georges Frédéric Strass created “paste” as an alternative to diamonds during the Georgian era. Leaded glass was cut and polished with a metallic powder until it shimmered brightly like a diamond in the light. These white “diamante” or “strass” stones were wildly popular with the glamorous Parisians, and eventually paste stones were colored to mimic other precious gemstones.
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral found in the Earth’s crust. The name is derived from the German term “quarz” and originated from the Slavic word meaning hard. It is known to be one of the hardest minerals on earth which is why it has been historically utilized in making jewelry. Quartz gemstones are hard, durable and extremely attractive. The stones can come in a variety of colors and hues. Quartz is an inexpensive mineral, while some varieties can be extremely rare, most varieties and sizes are commonly available. It has been used for centuries in the creation of jewelry and other ornamental objects. Quartz is an extremely versatile material that can be cut and carved into many shapes and sizes which has made it an asset historical and antique jewelry. Today, quartz is one of the most important gemstones in the colored stone trade and in jewelry making.
